One of the greatest legends of the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby intends to run in the race one last time this May, at the age of 84.

Ed Sherlock, one of only four men to have won the event more than five times, is preparing to make his final appearance in the 107-year-old race on May 24. This year marks the 60th anniversary of his first victory in 1956.

Sherlock made the announcement at the Ed Sherlock Five Miles Road Race, the annual event named in his honour.

“I’m getting on in age and I want to go out and do the race one more time while I’m still healthy,” said Sherlock, who last participated in the Derby in 2013.

“I train every other day on the beach and soon I’ll be adding in some road running.”

The six-times May 24 champion was at the finish line of yesterday’s five-mile race, cheering competitors as they completed the testing course in Southampton.

Jose Miranda and Gayle Lindsay cruised to victories in cool and blustery conditions.

Miranda, 32, is gearing up for a marathon in the US city of Virginia Beach next month, and ran a mostly solo race to win in 29min 01sec.

Afterwards he said he had been in two minds about whether to stay with the leading group or push the pace alone.

“I decided to go out and see what I could do. It felt hard against the wind, but I kept something in the bank for the last two miles,” he said, adding that he felt it was important to support races that honour the island’s running heroes.

“Ed Sherlock is a legend and we need to celebrate those greats who have come before, people like Ed and Stanley Burgess. It is an honour that he is here watching the race.”

In next month’s marathon Miranda is seeking a time of 3:05 or below to secure qualification for the Boston Marathon.

Finishing second yesterday was Omari Hart in 31:01, followed by Allan Fox in 31:11.

Women’s winner Lindsay toughed it out for long spells at the front of the chasing pack. It was her first time running the event, and she found the final mile hard. She was sixth overall in 33:04, ahead of Melissa Logie in 35:18, and Rebecca Shepherd in 36:13.

A two-mile race for juniors was won by Zebedee Wakely in 13:31, from Tajal Goater in 13:57, and Zende Butterfield in 14:04. First girl was Grace Rothwell in 14:26, ahead of Myeisha Sharrieff in 14:38, and Katherine Bean-Rosario in 14:5.

The five-mile walk was won by Sinclair Smith in 58:29.
