Shabana ready to roll back years

Egyptian legend Shabana

Amr Shabana, the Egyptian squash legend, leads another star-studded line-up for next month’s Randall & Quilter Legends of Squash.

The four-times world champion and world No 1 player, who retired from the Professional Squash Association World Tour last year, is excited to return to Bermuda to showcase his talents.

“I have some great memories of beautiful Bermuda, where I won my last world title back in 2007,” Shabana, who is now the Egyptian High Performance coach,” said.

Shabana is the favourite to win the title this year.

However, he will have his work cut out in a formidable field that includes past winners Thierry Lincou and David Palmer, Lee Beachill, Jonathon Power and John White.

Frenchman Lincou is the defending champion.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the Legends Tour and to get the chance to replay some of my best matches against the other World No 1 players,” Shabana added.

Shabana won the Axis Squash Challenge at the Devonshire courts in June last year, losing 10-12, 11-6, 11-3, 11-8 to Colombia’s Miguel Rodríguez.

The Randall & Quilter Legends of Squash tournament will be held at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association from April 13 to 16, with matches starting each night at 6pm.

The six-man draw will see three matches per night, with the final matches to be played on Saturday, April 16 followed by the presentations and Legends of Squash after party.

All of the squash legends will also be involved in youth clinics during their stay.

“Aside from the amazing matches the legends will play each night, they are also here working with young people at all levels of the game,” Patrick Foster, the BSRA director of squash, said.

“The players will be getting on court with children from school groups as well as players totally new to the game of squash.

“They will also be spending time with Bermuda’s junior national squad players in what is an amazing opportunity to learn for all involved.

“It would be a treat to get coaching from one world champion, but to be part of a training session with eight legends of this calibre is truly special.”

Tickets are available exclusively at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association in Devonshire.
