Warner claims title in St lucia
Antonio Warner has been crowned the Boys’ 12 & under division champion in the Sagicor COTECC Junior Tennis Tournament in St Lucia.
The Bermudian defeated Seed Leeum Chan Pak, the No 2 seed of Trinidad & Tobago, 4-1, 4-1 in the final today.
“I thought the tournament was a really good experience,” Warner said.
“I had a bad day at the start on the first day, which almost got me knocked out of the tournament.
“While playing the No 1 seed, I was annoyed that I lost the first set. Before the start of the second set, I thought if I can just hold serve and then break serve I have a chance to win.
“I said to myself, ‘I did not come here to lose’. It was a tough competition as the Trinidadian’s have a strong team.”
Warner, who beat Trinidad’s No 1 seed James Hadden 3-5, 4-0, 10-2 on Wednesday, added: “The coaches have helped my training.
“They have made me put in more hours and work harder; this helped my game improve.
“I’m happy to win two COTECC tournaments in one year; one in Trinidad and now St Lucia. Thanks to the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association for entering me and believing in me.”
Warner’s team-mate Mackai Whitter lost 6-4, 6-0 to Sebastian Sylvester, Trinidad’s No 4 seed, in the Boys’ 14 & under division yesterday.
