Tyler Butterfield finished 29th at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in what will likely be his final race at the iconic event.

Butterfield completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run yesterday in a time of 8hr 30sec 38min, with splits of 50:42, 4:31:27 and 3:03:58.

The 35-year-old was the 24th quickest out of the water before posting the 36th fastest bike ride and 24th best run out of 44 male elite triathletes.

Butterfield’s top-30 finish was better than his 36th place last year, when he finished in 9:27:22, but a far cry from his fifth in 2015 and seventh in 2013 when he equalled father Jim’s personal best at the championships first held in 1978.

Patrick Lange, of Germany, made Hawaii Ironman history by becoming the first triathlete to break the eight-hour barrier at the championships.

Lange, who proposed to his girlfriend at the finish, crushed the course record of 8:01:40, which he set last year. finishing in 7:52:39.

Bart Aernouts, of Belgium, came second in 7:56:41, with David McNamee, of Britain, third in 8:01:09.

Daniela Ryf, of Switzerland, also set a course record, in the women’s race, finishing in 8:26:16.

Lucy Charles, of Britain, was second in 8:36:32 and Germany’s Anne Haug was third in 8:41:57.
