Free clinics on offer at Fairmont
Manders Tennis Management has launched free community clinica aimed at beginners of all ages to learn and enjoy the game.
The programme, run by Gavin Manders and Jovan Jordan-Whitter, takes place every Saturday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at Fairmont Southampton Tennis Club.
Tomorrow’s session will be the third delivered by MTM, with the number of participants growing each week.
“We wanted to give people the opportunity to play and really start to share our passion for the game with the locals,” said Manders, Bermuda’s No 1 player.
Jordan-Whitter, who won the Pomander Gate Tennis Club Open presented by Martini last month, said he hopes the clinics will make tennis more accessible to people of all backgrounds on the island.
“Tennis is an ‘elite’ sport and it can be very expensive,” Jordan-Whitter said. “We’re trying to provide an avenue for people to come out and relieve some stress and break a sweat.
“We’re hoping to grow it and get sponsored so we can feed those people who come out and attend. We want it to be fun and spark interest in people who would not normally come out and play. Hopefully we can turn them into some competitive tennis players.”
MTM will host a Red Ball Championship for players aged five to eight at Fairmont Southampton on Sunday from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Manders said: “Children will have an opportunity to learn how to compete in an educational environment.”
