Browne and Franklin chemistry proves key

Eye on the ball: Micah Franklin

Noah Browne hailed his “great chemistry” with men’s doubles partner Micah Franklin after they made a winning start to their Pan American Games campaign.

Browne and Franklin defeated Pizarro Camiruaga and Arias Pinto, of Chile, 11-9, 7-11, 2-11 at the Sports Complex Videna in the San Luis District yesterday afternoon.

The pair, who are looking to replicate their bronze medal-winning form from the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cali, Colombia, last year, will face the United States in the quarter-finals today (Friday) at 12.30pm Bermuda time.

Representing the US are Christopher Hanson, who is ranked 69th in the world, and Todd Harity, who has a ranking of 45th.

“We’re super-excited and it was definitely great to play well,” Browne said. “This is the one we want the most and we’re looking to make it happen.

“We had some great chemistry and we’re feeling strong.”

Franklin beat Abrego Aguilar, of El Salvador, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 in his first-round singles match in the morning.

Franklin showed plenty of emotion, pumping his fist repeatedly after defeating Aguilar, a tricky opponent who he lost to in their previous meeting.

“The previous time I played him I feel as though I could have played better,” Franklin said.

“I was really pumped to finally get the upper hand. Sometimes I can’t contol the emotion; it just comes out of me. It means so much to me to win at these Games.”

The 27-year-old admits he has been guilty of letting opponents off the hook in the past and was determined not to allow Aguilar back into the game.

“Sometimes I have to convince myself not to take my foot off the gas and to keep going,” he said.

“I’m always telling myself to keep going. That’s a method I have to make sure I don’t start to relax and just keep going regardless of the score.”

Yesterday evening, Franklin was defeated in the second round by Martinez Salazar, of Mexico, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5.

Meanwhile, Browne, lost on his debut at a major multi-sport event after losing 8-11, 12-10, 11-3, 11-5 to Chilean Camiruaga in the singles.
