Kyme injury hands El Salvador win
Bermuda finished twelfth in the men’s team squash competition after losing their final play-off match 2-1 to El Salvador yesterday.
Noah Browne, the island’s No 1 seed, lost the opener 11-6, 11-8, 3-11, 11-9 to Israel Abrego before Micah Franklin levelled the score by beating Jose Lopez 11-1, 11-9, 11-8.
Nick Kyme faced Rodrigo Porras in the decider, winning the first game 11-7 and was losing the second 10-7 when he had to retire because of a groin strain.
Bermuda qualified for the multi-sport event at the Pan American Squash Championships in Cayman Islands in September last year, where they had to finish in the top 12.
They beat the British Virgin Islands 2-0 to claim the final berth.
“Obviously we’re disappointed with where we finished [in Lima] but at the same time we’re really proud to be considered in the top 12 in the Pan American region,” Kyme, the team player-coach, said.
“We’re extremely excited to be here and it’s a huge accomplishment for us.
“Noah struggled again [against El Salvador]; it hasn’t been a good tournament for him, if I’m honest. Noah unfortunately got injured before the start of the Games and wasn’t at full strength.
“Micah came through and played really well and won. I was up one game and thinking I was at least in a good chance of winning when I pulled my groin.”
