On a roll: Trey Mallory is in a rich vein of form

Trey Mallory has continued his superb form after reaching the quarter-finals of the J4 Guatemala/Copa Universidad Galileo today.

Mallory, the island’s top-ranked junior, defeated Mexico’s Emiliano Gonzalez 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarters of the competition, which is part of the ITF World Junior Tennis Tour.

The Bermudian beat John Chinn, of Jamaica, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening match on Tuesday before defeating Kurt Miller, of the United States, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round yesterday.

Mallory, 17, is scheduled to play his quarter-final match today.

Meanwhile, Daniel Phillips’s journey in the Intime Tennis Direct Junior Open in Zoetermeer, Netherlands, came to an end after a third-round defeat.

The Bermudian teenager, who is part of the prestigious Rafal Nadal Academy, fell short of causing an upset against top seed, Kyvan Rietkerk, of Netherlands, in round three, losing 6-1, 6-2.

Phillips had previously beaten competition wild card Bjorn Schoemacher 6-1, 6-0 in the first round before coming out on top of a three-set battle against Freddy Blaydes, of Britain, ultimately prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to progress into the third round.
