Lion cub Dennis Joell roars to perfect game
Dennis Joell bowled a perfect game for league leaders The Cubs during week five of the Continental League on Monday night at the Warwick Lanes.
Joell achieved the feat for the second time against in the top-of-the-table clash with New Hope, as The Cubs came out comfortable 27-3 winners, thanks to his perfect game which came off ten frames with twelve strikes.
“This is the second time doing it, but it’s no less nerve-racking than the first time,” said Joell, who achieved the feat on November 12, 2018 in the same league.
Joell is a former goalkeeper for PHC and played cricket for the club as well. He also ran track in his younger days, but now has found another sport he can enjoy in his spare time.
“We’re doing trials again but I was on the national team the last two years,” he revealed. “It’s a two-year rotation.
“I’ve been bowling for nine or ten years and this is my second perfect game. I’ve had 299s where the last ball left that one pin, a couple of 298s and 297s, but it’s definitely a good feeling when you put all 12 strikes down.
“I don’t look to stop here,” added Joell, who had games of 204, 300 and 200 for a 704 top series. “Every time I approach the lane, it’s my goal to shoot a perfect game.”
As the tension grew, Joell kept his composure while the crowd began to take interest. “I tried not to look back,” he said. “The whole bowling alley started to go quiet as people started to filter in behind.
“Normally we have a pot for a perfect game and I asked the organiser, Harold [Minors], why haven’t we done the pot this year. He said it’s because of Covid; that things are tight for people.
“I sat there before I began my game and said if I get the first one, I’m going for it. I got the first and it really started sinking in on about the seventh frame. The hands started to get a little sweaty and people started to take note.
“It was ten frames and 12 strikes, with three strikes needed in the tenth frame.”
