Burrows gelding continues impressive transformation
Burrows Family’s harness racing pony Whatyatalkinbout has gone from rags to riches in just a matter of months.
The three-year-old gelding was subjected to ridicule after making a poor start during its debut campaign last season.
However, the Canadian-bred pony has since undergone an amazing transformation and continues to go from strength-to-strength with female driver Catrina Stephens in the sulky.
That encouraging trend continued during yesterday’s Remembrance Day racing at Vesey Street as Stephens and Whatyatalkinbout produced two solid runs to jump as many time bars and complete a clean sweep of victories in their respective division.
The pair started the day competing in the 1:08/1-1:11/3 time bar for the first time having moved up from the 1:11/4 & slower time bar the previous race day.
They ran a 1:06/2 on the way to victory in the opening heat and also won the second heat in 1:06 flat to advance from the 1:08/1-1:11/3 time bar and bypass the 1:06/4-1:08 division respectively.
“That’s incredible for him because he was the underdog,” Stephens said. “We started out in the slowest time bar [1:11/4 and slower] and already we have jumped two time bars within three race days.”
Owner David Burrows, added: “When he started he was ridiculous; I was ready to give up.
“I named him Whatyatalkinbout because everybody was talking about him and saying he was trash, so now they are eating their words.
“He’s definitely not trash now and I am very pleased with his progress.”
Stephens enjoyed another fruitful day at the track having also achieved multiple heat wins with Burrows’s mare, Shady Maple.
Meanwhile, also on the move was Kirista Rabain and mare, IC’s Overextended, who advanced from the 1:08/1-1:11/3 time bar and got a leg out of the 1:06/4-1:08 division.
“It was a fun day and fun to be back with the horse that I have been working with for a few months,” said Rabain, who was also a multiple heat winner on the day.
“It was nice to see it all pay off on the track and also nice to be in the atmosphere again with the racing people.”
Another driver achieving multiple heat wins was Scott Constable with mare, Gold Legacy.
“It was pretty good and definitely an improvement from last week,” Constable said. “Maybe not in the times we achieved but how she felt and her condition.
“She’s definitely a little bit fitter than last week, so that’s progress and it’s good for me.
“She’s doing good and 5.30 in the morning training is paying off.”
Simsfield Stables’s gelding, Simsfield Hardtimes, clocked the day’s fastest time of 1:03/2 competing in the fastest time bar of 1:03 & faster with driver Dylan DeSilva.
“I don’t want to ask too much of him every week, so I didn’t push him too much,” DeSilva said.
“But I kept him awake enough to do what he had to do, and we ended up with the fastest time of the day.”
