Dominant Daniel Phillips breezes to J4 title in Guatemala
Teenager Daniel Phillips pulled off what is believed to be the first International Tennis Federation victory by a Bermudian when he blew away seventh seed Diego Duran, of El Salvador, 6-0, 6-2 in the final of the J4 Guatemala at the Copa Universidad Galileo on Saturday in Guatemala City.
The 17-year-old, who was required to get into the tournament from the qualifying round, dropped only nine games in a period of dominance from the quarter-finals that made a nonsense of the tournament seedings.
His only spot of bother came in the second round when he dropped the first set against the American Humza Noor before battling back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The triumph was worth 60 ITF junior world-ranking points to the Bermudian.
Phillips no sooner collected his trophy for winning the J4 title than he was back on the courts to begin qualifying for the J5 Guatemala tournament, whose main draw begins on Monday.
His opponent in the first qualifying round of what is meant to be a weaker tournament, where 30 world-ranking points are on offer for the winner, was Cowen Lau, of Indonesia.
The Asian youngster fared little better than those who have come up against the in-form Bermudian in the past few days, going down 6-1, 6-1.
Despite periods of inclement weather in Guatemala City, Phillips was back on the courts on Sunday to dampen the ambitions of local Jigme Balseiro with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the second qualifying round.
He followed up that win with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brazilian Samuel Maia, securing his place among the eight qualifiers to the main draw.
Phillips, who actually celebrated his birthday during the tournament, will return to action tomorrow after being granted a day to recover, following his hectic schedule up to this point.
