Volleyball squad named for Eastern Caribbean tournament in Antigua
The Bermuda Volleyball Association has named an 11-man team for the upcoming Eastern Caribbean Senior Men's Championship in Antigua.
The tournament will take place from July 6 to 10 with eight countries; hosts Antigua and Barbuda, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts and Nevis, Dutch St Maarten, Anguilla, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia and Bermuda, participating.
There are a couple of changes to the team from the recent US Open Championships in Orlando as Bermuda will be without middle blockers Jadon Springer and Kaleb Hamilton, but have added outside hitter Mike Sakata and libero Jake Roberts, winner of the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation National Junior Athlete sponsors award.
Also in the team is Tyler Hurdle, who is now available after playing for Queens University in the United States. Players retained from the US Open are Kyle Hamilton, Ryan Davies, Brandon Sousa, Eron Woods, Tyler Siese, Jaden Malpas, Rob Saraiva and Tiago Ferreira.
Elizabeth Rae, the Bermuda head coach, is looking forward to the team’s next overseas tournament and expects some tough competition for the team.
“We are excited to participate in the upcoming ECVA event,” she said. “We learnt a lot from our recent trip to Orlando and we have been working hard in the gym to tweak a few aspects of our game.
“Having the US Open as preparation will definitely give us an advantage going into the ECVA's. But we know we will face some tough competition and every match will be hard fought.”
