Erica Hawley bounces back from WTCS Bermuda heartbreak in Chile
Erica Hawley got over her World Triathlon Championship Series Bermuda debut disappointment with a spirited 38th-place finish in the World Triathlon Cup in Vina del Mar, Chile.
Just a week after crashing out of what promised to be a memorable homecoming when skidding out on the third of eight bike laps, the 24-year-old recovered sufficiently to return to the start line alongside 52 competitors on Playa del Sol beach.
Exiting the water from the 750-metre swim in 10min 40sec, Hawley who is on the Asics World Triathlon development team, went on to clock 31:05 on the three-lap, 18.6-kilometre cycle and completed the two-lap, 5km run in 18:27 for a combined time of 1hr 1min 12sec, slightly more than four minutes adrift of France’s Sandra Dodet.
The victory was Dodet’s second World Cup win of the year, with Gina Sereno of the United States behind her finishing on the podium for her first time ever in a World Cup in Vina del Mar.
In the battle for third place, Colombia’s Maria Velasquez outlasted Claire Michel, of Belgium, to grab her first ever podium spot at a World Cup event.
