Saltus and Warwick share top honours at Primary School Cross-Country Championships
Saltus Grammar School and Warwick Academy each won two team championships at the Bermuda School Sports Federation Primary School Cross country championships on Tuesday.
Racing at Flora Duffy Stadium, Yara Muhammad of Dalton E. Tucker Primary School was crowned under-9 girls’ champion finishing in 9min 55sec just as the heavens opened with rain.
Zaya Berkeley from West End Primary claimed silver ahead of Ivy Pena from Somersfield Academy in third.
Saltus Grammar School claimed first place in the team event with 57 points, ahead of Bermuda High School School in second with 80 points and Warwick Academy rounded out the podium spots with 95 points
The under-9 boys got going after a brief rain delay and Saltus Grammar school produced an impressive team effort.
Adrian Myers stopped the clock at 8:54 to win gold ahead of Liam Horribin, who finished second in 8:55. Khaleef Daley from Harrington Sound Primary finished third in 9:09.
Saltus had seven finishers inside the top ten and easily won the team event with 24 points. Warwick Academy finished second with 126 and Somersfield Academy third with 137
In a repeat of the Front Street Mile result, Naomi MacGuinness, from Warwick Academy, pipped Purvis Primary’s Sukanya Jobson at the tape to win the over-9 girls race, with both recording a time of 10:46. Solae Goater from Gilbert Institute rounded out the top three with a time of 11:01.
Warwick Academy earned team honours with a total of 65 points, edging out Bermuda High School on 69 points, while Saltus finished a distant third with 118 points
Warwick Academy runners swept the podium spots in the over-9 boys race.
Sami Luber enjoyed the biggest margin of victory on the day, winning his race by more than 20 seconds in a time of 10:09. Christian Phillips-Steede finished second in 10:31 while Dage Butterfield came third in 10:36.
Warwick won the team division with 63 points. West Pembroke Primary finished second with 111 and Saltus third on 128.
