Ace display: Daniel Phillips poses with his cheque for winning the Battle of Boca Tournament title in Florida

Daniel Phillips continued his promising recent form by clinching the men’s open singles division title at the Battle of Boca Tournament in Florida.

The Bermudian opened up in fine fashion during the three-day tournament, which featured a strong field of collegiate and professional players, by overcoming Edward Wang in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, to book his place in the round of 32.

There, Phillips proved far too strong for American Juan Mendoza, brushing aside his opponent 6-1, 6-1 to advance ino the next round, where he faced Lance Castela of Mexico on the second day of competition.

Just as he had in his previous match, Philips gave up only two games on his way to another straight sets victory, winning 6-1, 6-1 to book his place against Richie Torres of the United States in the quarter-finals.

Phillips took the first set with ease, 6-0, before holding off a brief fightback from his opponent in the second set to win 6-4 and move on to the final four.

Heading into the final day of competition, Phillips was handed a place in the final without having to step foot on the court after Chilean opponent Miguel Angel Cabrera was forced to withdraw with an injury sustained in his victory over American Oscar Oberoi Jensen in the previous round.

The final proved Phillips’ toughest test, with the Bermudian coming through a hard-fought encounter 6-4, 6-4 against Bernardo Munk Mesa of Spain to clinch the title
