Costa Rica too strong for Bermuda’s juniors
Bermuda’s World Junior tennis team were again out of luck in the Dominican Republic, losing to the No. 5 seeds Costa Rica.
Tobiah Goodchild led the squad in the opening singles match but lost 6-2, 6-2 and he was followed in the second singles tie by Tristan Pettit, who was unlucky to lose 7-3 in the deciding tiebreak.
Playing for pride in the doubles rubber, Pettit and Jaden Jones lost 6-3, 6-3 but despite missing out in all three matches, coach Terry Smith felt the scorelines flattered Costa Rica.
“Tobiah took the number one spot,” Smith said. “He lost his match but played very well, was in the match but just didn’t capitalise on the opponent’s mistakes
"Tristan Pettit went three sets with his opponent, losing the first set 5-7, which was closely contested. he won won the second set 6-1 very well and put up a good battle, losing the tie-breaker 7-3.
“Tristan and Jaden battled hard in the doubles but the other team just got the edge on them.
“ I was very pleased with the performance. I guess the other teams were just a little more patient and steady in order to get the important point, which would give them the game and that leads to the match.”
Bermuda’s final group match takes place on Wednesday against Aruba, with Smith feeling his young squad can take advantage of weaker opponents.
“Aruba have also not won a tie and they have a worse average than us because they are not winning many games, so hopefully tomorrow we will go out and be able to capitalise on our chances,” he said.
