Tobiah Goodchild into semi-finals in singles and doubles
Tobiah Goodchild continued his impressive winning form by making it through to the semi-finals of the Cotecc (Central American & Caribbean Tennis Confederation) Under-14 San Jose Bowl in Costa Rica.
Goodchild faced No. 3 seed Antonio Martinez from Guatemala in the quarter finals and was pleased to come through 6-2, 6-4.
“I am playing well, and enjoying playing against all of these different playing styles,” Goodchild said.
“It is really challenging me to think harder about my shot selection and ball placement, which is helping me to adapt better to the different players.”
Coach Steve Bean has travelled with Goodchild and is thrilled with the youngster’s progress.
“He played awesome tennis and was very consistent,” Bean said.
He started to mix in the slice in the second set, which allowed him to turn the second set around from 4-2 down. He started mixing in slices, drop shots as his opponent played very aggressively from the baseline and wasn’t missing.
“I’m not allowed to coach during the match and Tobiah was very smart to figure out the change in tactics on his own. He deserves plenty of credit.”
Goodchild also made it to the semi-fnals in the doubles alongside partner Samuel Bryce of Costa Rica, with the pair beating Mateo Gutierrez and Marco Avendano 7-5, 5-7, 10-7
“His doubles partner is not a good doubles player, but he is the type to fight and hang in there with you,” Bean said.
Tobiah had to raise his game and carry this guy. Tobiah is serving well, returning well and it was a really tight match.
“To be in the semis in the singles and doubles is a huge accomplishment for him. I’m enjoying working with him.”
