Young stars shine in Spring Fever Tournament
The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association’s Spring Fever Tournament came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday.
After four days of play, a series of finals were held featuring some of the island’s most exciting young talents doing battle in their quest to take home the title.
Fourth seed Jaden Jones pulled off a surprise in the under-14 boys age group beating the No. 1 seed Tobiah Goodchild 6-4, 6-4.
As was to be expected from teenagers who had represented the island in international competition this year, a high standard was set, but it was Jones who held his nerve to pick up the title.
Two Bermuda internationals also took each on in the under-16 boys final with top seed Tristan Pettit facing second seed Zach Maguire.
It was the latter who came out on top, winning the first set 6-2 and taking a tighter second set 6-4.
Nadhira Durham completed a notable double when becoming both the under-16 and under-18 girls champion.
She produced a nearly faultless performance in the under-16 final to beat Emma Hales 6-0, 6-0 and was in action just a few hous later in the under-18 decider.
Durham was again assured when winning the opening set against Airez Gilbert-Simons 6-0. Gilbert Simons fought bravely in the second set but Durham prevailed 6-4.
Hasan Khan and Raul Maldonado produced a thrilling match in the under-12 boys division. Top seed Khan took the first set 6-3 but Maldonado bounced back superbly to take the second set 6-2. The decidind tie-break went to the wire with Khan winning 10-8 to claim the honours.
Samantha Morgan was named under-12 girls champion after beating Lee Terceira 6-3, 6-2, while Vincent Boisvert beat Numair Khan in the under-18 boys final.
