Hundreds compete to raise money for Cancer Charity Pals
More than 200 runners and walkers pounded the streets on Sunday at the first annual Waterfront Wellness 5K Run and Walk.
WIth $10 of the $40 entry fee donated to Cancer Charity Pals, more than $2,000 has already been raised by those giving up their morning to run, with the race starting and finishing on Pitts Bay Road.
A regular in these events, Phillip Woolins, wearing his customary Spongebob running vest, was the first to cross the finish line in a time of 17min 4.3secs, more than 30 seconds clear of his nearest rival Khari Sharieff.
Neal Towlson was the third man home, with Rupert Cuddon-Large and Tim Price next home.
While those runners were the first five men home, they were not the first five runners to cross the line, with Estienne Coetzee, the first woman home, finishing third overall.
Coetzee crossed the line in 17:53.3, beating the next woman home, Maria Kemiji-McDonald, by more than a minute.
Stepanka Sprincova finished third, with Teresa Rios and Liana Medeiros rounding out the top five.
The 5K competitive walk was won by Paul Hayward, who finished in a time of 33:00.5, more than three minutes clear of Wendell Hollis in second. Nancy Andrews-Sousa finished third overall, with Viv Palmer and Amanda Fubler the next two walkers to cross the line.
