Double delight for unbeaten Bailey’s Bay
White Hill Field (Warwick won the toss): Bailey’s Bay beat Warwick by 7 wickets
Having beaten defending champions St. George’s in a low scoring affair on Saturday, Bailey’s Bay followed up with a resounding seven-wicket victory over relegation-threatened Warwick at White Hill Field on Sunday.
Chasing 95 runs for victory, Bay only needed 11.1 overs as Delray Rawlins opened the Bay innings and was in demolition mood as he clobbered the Warwick bowlers to all corners of the field to finish the game off in fashion with a six over the long off boundary and remained unbeaten on 74 with five sixes and six fours.
Rawlins should have been caught when on 67 off the bowling of 14-year-old James MacFarlane but wicketkeeper Ajani Lee dropped the simplest of catches.
With the back-to-back victories, Bay are now top of the table with one game to play but captain Terryn Fray is cautious not to get too excited.
“It was a good weekend for us to get the two victories, but the job is not over as yet” an understated Fray said. “We will celebrate the eastern counties trophy tonight but have one league game left in two weeks’ time and we need to be ready for it”.
Earlier, Warwick captain Malachi Jones’ decision to bat first backfired as he opened the batting but had his off stump pushed back by Macquille Walker in his second ball off his first over. The Bay bowlers were in control throughout as Warwick could only muster 34 runs at the halfway stage of their innings.
Marcus Alan Johnson, batting at number five, was the only Warwick batsman to offer any effective resistance as he glanced one down the leg side of Walker to bring up his 50 (five sixes and one four) in the penultimate over. But he would fall leg before victim to the same bowler two balls later after dominating a team high 51-run, fourth wicket partnership with Cory Burgess.
Burgess finished unbeaten on 15 as Warwick closed out their innings with a below par 94 for five from 20 overs. Walker and Jahre Blakeney shared all the wickets to fall with three for 14 and two for 10 runs, respectively.
There was a bright moment for the defeated Warwick team when young MacFarlane had Bay captain Fray (10) caught to become his prized scalp, but the youngster would make a confession as he spoke with maturity beyond his age.
“I am happy that I got the Bay captain Fray but I would have preferred Mr Rawlins as he played professional cricket in England.”
