Bermuda fall just short of podium despite strong effort

Bermuda’s swimmers put in a strong effort on the third day of the Carifta Championships in Barbados but ultimately fell just short of –winning their first medal of the competition.Jesse Washington recorded the best finish, coming fourth in his Boys 11-12 100m free final. Washington finished in a time of one minute 2.17 seconds, behind winner Tyreke Wernet (58.59), Malcolm Resin (59.91) and third-placed Adrian Hoek (59.93).The Island’s swimmers were also in action in four other finals, although none of them could manage any better than seventh.Ashley Yearwood was in an extremely fast 100m free final that saw four swimmers go under one minute for the race.Winner Chinyere Pigot clocked a time of 57.88 seconds, while Yearwood finished in 1:01.16.Nick Patterson finished the night strong with a new age group and Bermuda national record of 2:17.08 but still finished well down the leaderboard in the Boys 15-17 200m fly.In the other races Mitchell Gariepy (Boys 11-12 50m breast stroke) and Vanessa Esposito (Girls 11-12 200m IM) also came seventh.The Bermuda squad had one last chance to finish strong last night, as Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith competed in their first finals at the Carifta Championships.Both made it through to the finals of the 200m backstroke after making huge improvements in their personal best times in the heats.Washington meanwhile also dropped five seconds off his time in the 50m free to hit another quadruple A standard swim, qualifying for the finals in the process.Yearwood finished stong to book a place in the 50m free, while Bermuda also had two relay teams performing in the 4x50m free.
