Record-breaker Blackburn bags silver medal
Lisa Blackburn has won a silver medal at the Caribbean Championships after smashing the national record in the 200 metre breastroke.The veteran swimmer swam a time of two minutes, 40.01 seconds in the girl’s 18 and over final in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, breaking Jenny Smart’s 1992 record.National coach Ben Smith said: “It was great to have (Lisa) swim that way in the final and will be a confidence boost for her as she continues her preparation for the Olympic qualification.”Bermuda swimmer Jesse Washington swam personal bests in the boy’s 10-12 50 metre backstroke and the boy’s 10-12 200 metre butterfly, but was still unable to reach the finals yesterday.Nicole Yearood had a promising swim in the girl’s 18 and over 50m back and Ashley Yearwood performed well in the girl’s 15-17 200m free but neither reached the finals.Smith added: “Tomorrow we will have Jesse in the 100 free which is one of his best and favorite events. Nick Patterson will have his first race with the 200 fly where he will be looking for his Youth world’s time,” she said.“Ashley will have the 50 free while Nicole and Rebecca Heyliger will have the 50 fly and 100 free. All of those events are great opportunities for these swimmers to get into the finals. Lisa will be in the pool again with the 200 individual medley where we hope she can continue her good form.”
