Burch sets sight on new PB at Pan Ams
Bermuda swimmer Roy-Allan Burch has set his sights on a new personal best at this month’s Pan Am Games in Mexico and believes he can challenge for a medal.Burch became the Island’s first swimmer to break the 23 second barrier in the 50 metres freestyle at the recent World Championships in Shanghai. His milestone swim of 22.69 seconds shattered his national record of 23.10 and saw him achieve his goal of qualifying for next year’s London Olympics. The Charlotte-based swimmer will now look to continue his impressive form in Guadalajara where the Games are being held from October 14 to 30.“Setting a personal best is not out of the question. I will have to be able to swim outside myself if I want to reach my goal of getting a medal,” said Burch, who will join Kiera Aitken and Lisa Blackburn in Bermuda’s swim team.“Competitions at this time of the year are usually slower than those during the summer. With a personal best I can compete for a medal or a top spot in the final. Getting my legs stronger along with a stronger core will be the key to my success next summer. Closing the gap between me and the number one contender will take a great amount of focus.”The 26-year-old already has one eye on next summer’s Olympics where he hopes to hold his own against the world’s top swimmers.“I would like to thank those who have shown support while I work towards the Olympics,” he said.“Your support has been greatly valued and I hope that I have shown that I am a worthy investment. With your continued support and new support I will be able to maximize my training and reach a new level of swimming for Bermuda.“The journey to the Olympics doesn’t begin the day you step on the flight. The journey has already begun (and) I will work my hardest to put Bermuda into a top spot at the Games.”Thousands of athletes from 42 countries, including 275 from the United States, will compete in 36 sports during the Pan Am Games, the world’s second-largest sporting event after the Olympics.
