Bermuda's swimmers reach three finals

Bermuda's swimmers continued to thrive in the pool at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Bahamas today.With six medals already in the bag, the Islanders have placed themselves in position to add to their impressive medal haul by reaching three finals.Jesse Washington, who has already won three gold medals (200m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly) and a silver (50m backstroke), qualified for tonight's 11-12 boys 100 metre freestyle final in a new Bermuda record time of 59.55. The previous record (1:01.73) held by William Massey had stood since 1992.Washington also shattered Nic Patterson's Carifta record in the 200 metre butterfly which he swam in a time of 2:46.01.The Sandys Middle School student also qualified for tonight's 200 metre butterfly final. However, he was eventually scratched from the event so that he can focus on the 100 metre freestyle final instead.Saltus student Patterson covered the 15-18 boys 200 metre butterfly in a comfortable time of 2:19.00 to qualify for tonight's final.Also placing themselves in medal contention was Saltus student Shannon Hassell who qualified for the 11-12 girls 100 metre freestyle final with a personal best time of 1:06.58.Hassell has already won a silver (100m backstroke) and a bronze (50m backstroke) at the ongoing regional swim meet.Baylor School's Ashley Yearwood covered the 17-18 girls freestyle in a time of 1:01.73, which left her in tenth place and second alternate for tonight's freestyle final.Saltus' Philip Hagen swam a 1:00.09 in the 13-14 boys 100 metre freestyle which earned him a second qualifying time for this summer's Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships.Bermuda coach Ben Smith, said: "Jesse will be looking to go under 59 (seconds) in the 100 metre freestyle final, Nic is looking to go under 2:17.00 (Bermuda record) while Shannon is looking for another medal."
