Fletcher still confident of Games ticket

Olympic hopeful Julian Fletcher is confident he can qualify for this summer’s Games in the UK.The 21-year-old Bermudian set a new national record in the 100 metres breaststroke at last weekend’s Speedo Grand Championships in California, covering the distance in 1.03.5But that performance wasn’t good enough to book Fletcher’s ticket to London, something he hopes to achieve competing in the same discipline at tomorrow’s Trinidad National Championships.“My past two swims have been personal best times and I’m trying to cut out my best time (1.03.5) in order to qualify for the Olympics,” he said. “The time I did last week is a great time but unfortunately is not the Olympic cut.“So I am going to try and keep working at it and see what I can do this weekend to see if I can drop half a second and make it. I need to drop at least .6 of a second in order to make the cut.“I’m confident I can qualify for the Olympics because I have been putting in the effort constantly in the past six months to a year with hard training at my school and I think if I get my stroke right and focus on what I need to focus on and pinpoint the small things then I can do better in the race this weekend.”National coach Ben Smith also expressed optimism over Fletcher’s chances of achieving his main objective in Trinidad.“He keeps getting faster on every attempt so I am hopeful for Trinidad,” he said.Fletcher said he expected tough competition tomorrow.“It’s going to be a very good environment for me to swim in,” he said. “It’s going to be a big crowd there and good competition and I’m hoping I have a shot.”Fletcher is among a trio of local swimmers bidding to qualify for the Olympics this weekend.Past Olympian Kiera Aitken is competing in a Mare Nostrum Tour event in Barcelona, Spain where she hopes to make the grade while Lisa Blackburn hopes to achieve the same in California.Blackburn is competing with compatriot Roy-Allan Burch, the only local swimmer so far to qualify for this year’s Olympics, at this weekend’s Santa Clara Grand Prix.Yesterday saw Blackburn set a new national record (2:35.52) in the 200 metres breaststroke en route to reaching the ‘B’ final due to be held last night. Also in action was Burch who swam a 53.00 in the 100 metres freestyle as preparation for today’s 50 metrse freestyle.
