Wellman wins sprint finish

Just 11 seconds separated the first six finishers in the annual Trunk Island Swim in Harrington Sound on Sunday.But it was Dejan Wellman who took first place honours, pipping Bermuda’s Carifta junior champion Jesse Washington by just one second.Wellman won the final sprint in the swim from Trunk Island in the Sound to the Palmetto Bay Dock, clocking 18 minutes and nine seconds, with Washington, who took seven medals at this year’s Carifta Championships, finishing in 18.10.Third-placed Mike Cash was two seconds back in 18.12, Nick Strong fourth (18.13), fifth Kevin Insley (18.15) and sixth Tyler Smith (18.20).Bermuda’s former Olympian Kiera Aitken was the first female to finish in a time of 19.31.A total of 112 swimmers took part in the event.The Annual Round the Sound Swim, in which entrants can compete over various distances up to 10 kilometres, is set for October 14.
