Bermuda strikes gold at Carifta
Madelyn Moore has struck gold at the 2013 Carifta Swimming Championships in Jamaica.The Warwick Academy student won the gold medal in the 11-12 girls 50 meter backstroke final at the National Stadium Pool in Kingston on Saturday.Moore led the race from start to finish, touching the wall in a new Bermuda record time of 32.84 respectively.“Maddie was very excited to have won her first Carifta medal,” national swim coach Ben Smith told The Royal Gazette. “From her start to the finish she had the lead and touched the wall first.”Also standing on the podium yesterday was reigning Junior Male Athlete of the Year Jesse Washington.The Warwick Academy student recorded a personal best time of 1:01.17 en route to claiming the bronze medal in the 13-14 boys 100 meter butterfly.And he did so the hard way after having to come from behind to grab a place on the podium.“I had to race hard to get that medal,” he said. “The new age group is a good challenge.”Emma Harvey placed fifth in the 11-12 girls 100 meter butterfly final in a new Bermuda record time of 1:13.36.Competition continues today.
