Bermuda claim 12 medals in Costa Rica

Medal winner Ashley Yearwood

Bermuda’s swimmers closed out the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Championships in Costa Rica on Friday night with a gold, silver and bronze medal to finish with 12 medals overall.Jesse Washington saved his best for last when he swam his second fastest time ever (55.09 seconds) in the 100 metres freestyle to claim the bronze medal while Ashley Yearwood kept her streak alive of always bringing home at least one medal from overseas when she dipped in under one minute to win the silver in the 100 freestyle. There wasn’t much rest between races for Lisa Blackburn but she was able to drop two seconds from her morning swim and finish in fourth place to just miss out on another medal. The final medal for the Bermuda team came again in the women’s relay where the 4x100 metres freestyle team of Rebecca Heyliger, Stephanie Myles, Lisa Blackburn and Ashley Yearwood set a national record in the 4x100 metres freestyle in 4:08.71.“We had Rebecca Sharpe and Stephanie Myles do a spirited swim off to see who would be the fourth member of the relay,” said national coach Ben Smith. “Stephanie out touched Rebecca and became the final member. All of the swimmers were tired after five days of competition but relays usually bring out the last bit of needed energy.“Rebecca Heyliger went first and put us in the early lead. Stephanie held on to the lead with her second leg and Lisa made the lead slightly bigger. When Ashley dove in the race was not in doubt but I hoped to see the national record fall. They took the gold and set the record — what a great way to cap off an exciting and successful CCCAN 2013.“Stephanie and Lisa started the final session with the 400 IM. It seemed that the number of races had caught up with Lisa as she was not at her usual level in the event and had to settle with a fourth-place finish. Stephanie competed well to finish in fifth place.”Added the coach: “Jesse was back up in the 50 fly and he showed the potential that we have seen so many times before. He lowered his age group Bermuda record and captured silver in the event. His competitor’s better start was all that separated Jesse from the gold medal and it gives young Jesse a goal to work towards in the remainder of the season.“Rebecca Heyliger was in our last individual event of the meet and was looking to add to our medal haul. Her start was not good which meant she was not in rhythm in the race and left her in seventh place in a race that was a close touch for all competitors.”In the morning heats Shannon Hassell reduced her PB in the 100 metres free by one second, taking her down to a 1:03.08 in the long course, though it did not enable her to make the finals.Jesse Washington swam a 55.25 time to make him the number one seed for the evening’s finals. Lisa Blackburn and Ashley Yearwood had good swims in their 100 frees with Ashley swimming a cautious race in 1:01:99 to protect her nagging shoulder injury and Lisa swimming the 100 free in 1:03.61. As a result of these times, they both qualified for the finals. Andrew Beveridge swam 56.10 which was just above his PB and just outside the time needed to make the finals and Ashley Irby swam 1:06.30 in her race which also just missed out for her final.“In the 50 fly, which is not a normal event for Shannon Hassell, she lowered her previous best time of 37.54 to 33.34 which was very close to getting her in the final,” said coach Smith. Jesse swam 27.31 which seeded him second for the finals. Ashley, still protecting her shoulder, swam 31.00 in her 50 fly and Rebecca Heyliger swam 30.19 which qualified her for the finals.“Ashley Irby matched her seed time of 33.17 exactly even though she recently swam under 33 at the Coral Springs Invitational. It was still a good swim for our youngest team member who will leave this meet with lots of experience to help her in future meets.”Bermuda Medals (12)Day 1: Lisa Blackburn (gold in 100m breaststroke, silver in 200 IM); Stephanie Myles (bronze in 800m freestyle); Shannon Hassell (silver in 100m backstroke).Day 2: Lisa Blackburn (gold in 200m breaststroke); Rebecca Sharpe (bronze in 100m backstroke).Day 3: Lisa Blackburn (gold in 200m butterfly).Day 4: Lisa Blackburn (gold in 50m breaststroke); 4x100m medley relay team (gold).Day 5: 4x100m freestyle team (gold); Ashley Yearwood (silver in 100m freestyle); Jesse Washington (bronze in 100m freestyle).
