Harvey wins double gold
Emma Harvey, the Bermuda swimmer, showed plenty of guts in her pursuit of glory, claiming two gold medals at the Caribbean Swimming Championships in Aruba last night.
Harvey came first in both the girls’ 11-12 200 metres individual medley and the 200 butterfly to help the Island surpass their best Carifta medal count by two with one day of the competition still remaining.
Bermuda took their tally to 17 medals with Ashley Irby winning bronze in the girls’ 11-12 100 freestyle, Maddie Moore winning silver in the girls’ 13-14 100 freestyle and Jesse Washington grabbing gold in the boys’ 13-14 freestyle.
Harvey was the star of last night’s show for Bermuda at the Pisina Olimpico Roly Bissilik pool in Savaneta, with her 200 time of 2min 34.22sec smashing the previous age group national record of 2:39.22, which was set by Jenny Smart in 1987.
Harvey, of Warwick Academy, then had to call on her deep reserves of determination to claim her second gold of the evening, successfully holding off one rival only to see another surge ahead of her.
But Harvey battled back to reclaim the lead, setting another Bermuda age group record in a time of 2:36.25. Harvey, who required help to get out of the pool, took her medal tally to six at the Championship.
Bermuda finished day two, yesterday, of the Championships with seven medals.
Irby captured gold in the girls’ 11-12 200 metres freestyle, Washington claimed silver in 200 metres and bronze in the 50 butterfly, Harvey won silver in the 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Moore and Shannon Hassell won silver and bronze in the 13-14 girls’ 100 backstroke.
