Maddie Moore won a gold medal for Bermuda in the girls 13-14 100 metres freestyle at the Carifta Championships in Barbados yesterday.

Moore finished in a time of 59.86sec to claim the Island’s sixteenth medal of the 30th instalment of the Championships.

Emma Harvey then grabbed a bronze in the girls 13-14 200 butterfly in 2:35.41, Tyler Mazurek won bronze in the boys 15-17 200 butterfly, and the girls team took bronze in the 4x200 relay to take Bermuda’s medal count to an impressive 18.

The Island’s team had seven individual and two relay swims in finals on Saturday’s opening day.

First up was Vanessa Esposito in the 800 where she lowered her personal best, swimming 9:29.95, which set a 15-16 age-group record and placed her fifth. Next was Mazurek in his first Carifta Championships.

Mazurek swam a strong 16:33.75 in the 1,500 freestyle which broke the 17-18 age-group record and the Bermuda record and placed him in second, giving him the team’s first medal. The performance also qualified him for a Pan Am B time.

After the distance events, Harvey and Moore battled to the finish in the 50 backstroke. Harvey held off her compatriot to win the gold in 31.30. Moore was second in 31.62.

Harvey then finished second in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.29, which set an age-group and national record.

Esposito was next in the 100 fly and had a strong swim going 1:07.65 to take the bronze.

Capping off the first night, in the 13-14 girls relay, Megan Lau, Ashley Irby, Harvey and Moore swam a blistering 4:08.27 to take the silver medal and set an age-group record.

On the second day, Moore took it out strong in the 200 freestyle final in the 13-14 age group and led the race until the last ten metres where she was caught and finished with the bronze.

Moore had the additional consolation of breaking the Bermuda age-group record with a 2:12.15.

In the 15-17 age group, Esposito swam 2:11.66 to take the age-group record and place fifth. Jesse Washington and Mazurek had a Bermuda battle to the finish where the former placed fifth in 1:58.02 with an age-group record and Pan Am B time. Mazurek was sixth in 1:58.12, also under the Pan Am B standard and a 17-18 age-group record.

Moore and Harvey completed a one-two finish in the 13-14 girls 50 butterfly. Moore lowered her own age-group record to 28.74 with Harvey fractionally behind her in 28.84.

Esposito finished the girls fly with 29.93 to grab her second bronze of the meet, while Washington was eighth in his race in 26.88.

The 100 backstroke was up next, with Moore and Harvey in the final. Moore built a big lead only to be caught at the finish. Her runner-up time was 1:09.27, followed by Harvey in third in 1:09.86. Shannon Hassell took bronze with a 1:09.32 in her age group.

Harvey was next where she held the lead until the breaststroke leg, winning the bronze with a time of 5:24.64, an age-group record.

The final individual event for the night involved Mazurek, who captured the bronze medal with a 4:48.11 that set both the 17-18 age group and national record.
