Blackburn sets world record

Team spirit: Blackburn with her South Florida Aquatic Club team-mates at the Rowdy Gaines Classic in Florida

Lisa Blackburn, the Bermuda swimmer, has achieved a Masters world record in the 40-44 age group in the 100 metres individual medley in the Rowdy Gaines Classic in Orlando.

The 44-year-old posted a winning personal-best time of 1min 4.19sec, shattering the previous record of 1:04.25 set by Olympic silver medallist Susan von der Lippe, of the United States, in 2008.

Blackburn, who was competing for the South Florida Aquatic Club, also recorded a personal best in the 50 freestyle in 26.50.

“I’m so excited to have officially broken the Masters world record,” said Blackburn, who hopes to qualify for next year’s Rio Olympic Games.

“It’s also a new Bermuda national record by 1.5 seconds and a lifetime best time by 0.5 seconds.

“To swim lifetime best times in two events is pretty exciting.”

Blackburn represented Bermuda at last summer’s Pan Am Games in Toronto.
