Washington and Moore firing on all cylinders

Top pair: Washington and Moore were the winners for the boys and girls at the Schroders Spring Championships on the weekend at BASA pool

Carifta-bound Maddie Moore and Jesse Washington were the high-point overall winners for the girls and boys as the four-day Schroders Spring Championships closed yesterday with several records set.

The highlight was Moore setting a record in the 50 metres freestyle in a time of 26.07sec, a record for her in the 15-16 age group.

It was also a new national record and a Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association pool at Saltus Grammar School. The previous record was held by Kiera Aitken since 2009.

Ethan Daley finished off the last event of the night, the 1500 freestyle, by breaking the record of 17:42 with a time of 17:13.21. The old record was set by Jason Mastalir in 2005.

Elijah Daley was the record breaker last night with his 50 backstroke time lowering the record held by Keagan Woolley from 36.34 to 36.13. Brother Ethan Daley lowered his own 100 individual medley record from 1:06.85 to 1:04.32, while sister Elan Daley also got in the record-breaking act, as part of the Sharks 11-12 girls’ relay team that set a record in the 4x50 freestyle. The team, also containing Mia Ferguson, Jessie Bruton and Logan Watson-Brown, lowered the record from 2:04.39 to 2:01.65.

The Sharks 11-12 relay team set another record in the 4x50 individual medley, lowering the record from 2:23.94 to 2:20.28.

Moore took the 100 freestyle record from Vanessa Esposito. The old record was 59.77 and Moore has raised the bar with her new time of 57.43.

Jesse Washington lowered his own record in the 100 freestyle from 52.41 to 51.92. Shannon Hassell swam 2:23.72 in the 200 backstroke, breaking Rebecca Sharpe’s time of 2:26.99, which has stood since 2007.

Moore broke another record held by Esposito, this time in the 50 butterfly which she lowered from 29.77 to 29.04. Washington also broke his own record in the 50 fly, lowering the time from 26.75 to 25.88

Moore continued her fine weekend in the pool by breaking Ashley Yearwood’s record in the 50 backstroke from 2011. Her time of 29.72 lowered the time of 30.75 set by Yearwood.

Jack Harvey broke the 200 backstroke record with a time of 2:32.50. The record had been held by Brett Smith with a time of 2:34.25.

Imojen Judd broke the eight-and-under 50 backstroke record with a time of 43.49, taking the record of 43.87 from Elan Daley.

Washington broke his own record in the 200 freestyle of 1:54.67, lowering his record of 1:55.88. Elan Daley, who returned to the island for the meet, broke one of the longest-standing records for Bermuda swimming, recording a time of 35.77 to lower the record from 36.22 that was set back in 1987 by Olympian Jenny Smatt.

“It was great to have Jenny at the meet and see her have a chat with this young blossoming star swimmer,” said Ben Smith, the Bermuda head coach.

Ethan Daley lowered his own record in the 200 individual medley from 2:17.53 to 2:17.07 while Washington’s 100 butterfly win lowered his own record of 58.57 to 58.39. He is already under the 17-18 record before he moves to that age group later this year.

Washington’s 50 freestyle time of 24.08 lowered his own record from 24.12. He will be looking to reach 23 [seconds] in the near future, Smith revealed.

“This was a spectacular four days of swimming in Bermuda,” Smith said. “We are so thankful to our sponsor, Schroders, for allowing this competition to be so strong. We also appreciate the extra competition that was given by our guest swimmers from Cayman Islands.”

The Carifta Championships will be held in Martinique from March 24 to 26.
