Harvey strikes gold twice
Emma Harvey made a scintillating start to the Carifta Swimming Championships after winning two gold medals on the opening day of the competition in Martinique yesterday.
Harvey, competing in the 13 to 14 age category, won the 50 metres backstroke final in a time of 30.37sec before storming to victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.12.
Also striking gold was Madelyn Moore, competing in the 15 to 17 division, who won the 50 backstroke in 31.00.
Two other Bermuda swimmers made last night’s final, with Logan Watson-Brown, in the 11 to 12 category, placing eighth in the women’s 50 backstroke in 34.02, and Sam Williamson, also in the 11 to 12 division, coming fifth in the men’s 200 breaststroke in 2:56.53.
Earlier in the evening Bermuda’s Vanessa Esposito, in the 13 to 17 category, finished second in the 800 freestyle fast preliminaries.
Bermuda, coached by Ben Smith, have sent a 11-member team to Martinique, where the competition is running until Friday.
Harvey and Moore won six medals each from Barbados last year when the 17-member team won 24 medals, two more than the previous year in Aruba.
