Harvey looks to continue golden form

Golden girl: Harvey is presented with one of the ten medals she won in Martinique

Emma Harvey will be looking to pick up where she left off at the Carifta Swimming Championships when she competes at this month’s British Championships in Glasgow.

The teenage swimmer was in superb form at last week’s Carifta Championships in Martinique where she won ten medals, including seven gold, and set four championship records in the girls 13-14 age group.

“The next meet for me will be the British Championships in two weeks’ time which is also the British Olympic trials, so it will be amazing to be at the same meet as all the swimmers going to the Olympics,” Harvey said. “Some of my team-mates from Millfield [in Somerset, England] are hoping to qualify, so it will be very exciting.”

The British Championships will be held from April 12 to 17 at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Harvey, 14, won gold in Martinique in the 100-metres freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 and 100 butterfly and 200 and 400 individual medley, as well as in the 5K Open Water event where she won her age group and was second overall.

She also won silver in the 50 breast, 200 and 100 backstroke and set new championship records in the 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke, as well as the 50 and 100 butterfly.

“I was hoping for some fast swims but you never know quite how you are going to feel once the meet starts,” Harvey said. “Overall, I was really happy with my races and particularly in the events I had personal bests. I had a fantastic week in Martinique.”

Bermuda’s 11-member team made their presence felt in Martinique, winning 21 medals, including nine gold.

“I think the whole team performed really well and it was great to see so many of my team-mates do well,” Harvey said. “I was especially impressed with all the 11-12 age group swimmers. They performed brilliantly.”

The championships proved to be a family affair for Harvey as her younger brother, Jack, won the bronze in the boys 11-12 200 backstroke.

“The highlight of the meet for me was definitely watching my brother win the bronze in the 200 back,” she said.

Jack Harvey earned a trip to the podium in his second appearance at the championships.

“Some of my swims at the start of the meet did not go very well,” he said. “But the 200 back was the very last event, and I was so happy to win a medal.”

The Carifta Championships has become one of Harvey’s favourite events.

“I have been to many overseas meets but nothing compares to the atmosphere at Carifta,” she said. “The noise of the music and cheering is incredible. It’s why so many of us work so hard to qualify to get there.

“To represent your country at an international competition is such an honour and I’m so proud to be part of Bermuda’s team.”
