Madelyn Moore came up short in her final bid to reach the qualifying standard for the Commonwealth Games in the women’s 50 freestyle at the Luxembourg Euro Meet today.

The 17-year-old, who is in her final year at Plymouth College in England, missed out on her first attempt after finishing seventh with a time of 26.67sec in her heat.

Moore’s time was good enough to make the B final, where she had another shot at qualifying for the Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, in April, but again came up short, finishing fifth in 26.52.

“I gave it my all and unfortunately did not make the qualifying standard for Commonwealth Games,” Moore said.

Meanwhile, Evan Farrow qualified for the Carifta Swimming Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, with the last roll of the dice during the opening meet of the Best of Best Shipping Series at the BASA Pool today.

Farrow, who attends Peddie School in New Jersey, met the triple A standard in the boys’ 15-17 50 freestyle on his third and final attempt on the last day of qualifying. He narrowly coming up short on his previous two attempts in frigid conditions.

“Evan was racing Jesse Washington and they had a good battle and I would say Jesse was pacing him more than racing him,” Ben Smith, the Bermuda coach, said.

“In the last part they had a battle right to the finish and Evan got the time and it was super exciting. That was the highlight of the day because most of it was a struggle with how cold it was.”

Farrow is the sixteenth and final local swimmer to qualify for the Carifta Championships to be held at the National Aquatic Centre in Kingston from March 31 to April 3.

“Right now we have 16 qualified but now it’s depending on who is available because Carifta is during April and some people are in school and so we have to make sure that everybody is confirmed and can attend and then we can be able to release the team,” Smith said.

Other highlights at the meet saw Kaegan Woolley break Julian Fletcher’s national age group record in the boys 15-16 50 breaststroke. The Sharks Swim Club foursome Lewis Sweeney, Joshua Thorne, Woolley and Washington also set a new national age group record in the boys’ 17-18 400 freestyle relay while there were also numerous personal best times recorded.

“Obviously because of how cold the weather was we weren’t expecting to have a lot of fast swims, it was brutal,” Smith said.

“There were lots of PBs because they are trained to swim fast right now but the conditions were not really set up for them to swim fast, so it was good to see that amount of times dropping.”

The second meet of the Best of Best Shipping Series takes place on February 24 at the BASA Pool.
