Bermuda have sent a team of 28 athletes to the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Confederation Swimming Championships in Barbados.

The team, which left the island yesterday, will compete at the championships at the Barbados Aquatics Centre, Wildey, Christ Church, from June 28 to July 2.

With a strong qualifying selection of two AAA-standard times, 36 swimmers met the standard. Although Bermuda have entered 28 swimmers, there will be only 27 competing as Myeisha Sharrieff broke her arm and will be unable to swim.

The level of competition at CCCAN looks to be particularly strong, with Mexico, Venezuela and Puerto Rico joining the strong federations of the Carifta region.

Ben Smith, the Bermuda swim coach, said: “This higher level of competition will be a great challenge for our young team.

“We are looking forward to seeing them compete at their best and the results will take care of themselves.

“This team has a great mix of some of our up and comers along with some of our experienced University-age swimmers.

“For some of our swimmers, it will be the highlight and end to the season, while others will go on to Canadian Age Groups, World Championships and Pan American Games. The team will be coached by Smith and Richard Goodwin. The team managers will be Tammy Ingham and Lisa Foffano.
