Madelyn Moore and Elijah Daley return for National Championships
Madelyn Moore and Elijah Daley have returned to Bermuda to headline a stellar cast of swimmers at the Bermuda National Swimming Championships this weekend.
Action at the National Aquatic Centre gets under way with preliminaries on Friday morning, with finals taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
Moore, Jack and Emma Harvey, and Daley will be leading the charge for Bermuda, with Moore managing to persuade A.J. Pouch, who attends Virginia Tech alongside her, to participate in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.
Ben Smith, the Bermuda national team coach, is excited at the opportunity to get his best swimmers at all ages together, with hundreds of races taking place over the next three days.
“Is it good to have the likes of Maddy Moore, Jack Harvey, Emma Harvey and Elijah Daley coming from school together with a guest swimmer from Maddy Moore’s school Virginia Tech,’’ said Smith.
“It's a great opportunity for the youngsters to see what the highest level of swimming produces and to race in front of the home crowd. Several of these swimmers will be representing Bermuda in coming months in the CAC Games and the World Championships in Japan,.’
This weekend’s championships also present the swimmers with an opportunity to get selected for the Bahamas Nationals and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
“We also have the Bahamas Nationals in June for the junior swimmers and Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago for the 14-18 age group. So, over this weekend, athletes will be competing for the Commonwealth and for the Bahamas Nationals,’’ Smith said.
