Lisa Blackburn to host International Women’s Day swim clinic
Lisa Blackburn, a three-times Pan American Games medal-winner, Masters world record holder, chief motivation officer and head coach of TheSwimLife.co, is holding a camp for aspiring female swimmers next month.
The camp, to be held at the National Sports Centre on March 9, a day after International Women's Day, is targeted at girls aged between 9 and 15.
Ashley Yearwood, a two-time Division III champion and certified swimming coach, will be one of the special guests as will Panzy Olander, a triathlete and certified CrossFit coach, Jasmine Furbert, the owner of VRY Yoga, and Taeya Dent of Taeya Dent Media.
“Our goal is to inspire, motivate and empower female athletes in Bermuda,’’ Blackburn said.
“This is an opportunity for 12 girls only, aged 9 to 15, to learn swimming skills and drills for all four competitive swim strokes from two retired Bermudian elite athletes and professional swimmers for Bermuda.
“Between the two of us, Ashley and I have won a total of 19 medals from the 2013 Island Games.
“We both represented Bermuda at championships throughout the region, the United States and around the world, bringing back medals from several international events.
“We are passionate about giving back and inspiring the next generation of Bermuda’s young athletes. We look forward to sharing our experiences, knowledge, and tips and tricks for peak performance and how to “be your best” both in and out of the pool.
“We want to keep the numbers low since only Ashley and myself will be coaching for the swim session.
Blackburn also outlined the specific roles of the other distinctive guests at the coaching clinic.
“Panzy Olander will speak about the importance of strength training,’’ Blackburn added.
“She will also highlight the importance of versatility and how being a well-rounded athlete and person will contribute to success in any sport or life endeavour.
“Jasmine Furbert will lead a yoga flow and visualisation session that focuses on the importance of flexibility, distraction control and learning to trust the “flow” in any moment.
“Taeya Dent is our event photographer. She will capture special moments throughout the day of our participants and role models working together to inspire inclusion with the next generation of female athletes.”
