Records tumbled amid a string of fantastic performances at the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association Short Course Championships at the weekend.

Brandon Adkins set a new best mark in the 17-18 age group in the 200 metres freestyle, touching the wall in 1min 50.30sec, taking more than two seconds off Jesse Washington’s record of 1:52.40 set in March 2018.

Washington also lost his record in the 100 metres freestyle with his time of 51.27sec, also set in 2018, lowered to 50.95 by Adkins.

Thomas Cechini slashed more than ten seconds off his own 800 metres freestyle record, set in March last year in the 15-16 age group, when finishing in 8:37.35.

Cechini expunged Washington’s name further from the record books when setting milestones in the 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle. The record times now stand at 2:10.94 and 1:53.68 respectively.

It’s no surprise that those performances helped Cechini pick up the high score award for boys aged 15 and over, leading home a clean sweep for the Harbour Swimming Club by beating Pharoah Benevides and Noah Maranzana into second and third respectively.

Bella Howes, from the Sharks Swimming Club, came out on top in the 15 and over girls division thanks to some fine displays, notably in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Katherine Wheddon and Adriana Argent rounded off the podium.

It was a good day for the Cechini family, with Thomas’s sister Gabriella beating Lila Connolly and Sienna Spurling to the high-performance award in the girls 13-14 division, while Joey Cechini finished second to Logan Jones in the same age group for boys.

Scarlett Spurling, of the Harbour Club, and Sharks’ Jacob Leclerc won top honours in the 11-12 age groups, while Joseph Yammine and Tabitha Bell picked up first prize for swimmers aged ten and under.
