Bermuda Olympic hopefuls in action this weekend
Some of Bermuda’s Olympic hopefuls will be in action around the world this weekend.
Just a week after Dame Flora Duffy made the defence of her Olympic triathlon look possibility after she finished seventh in Yokohama on her return to competitive action, compatriot Erica Hawley faces her last chance to automatically secure a place in Paris this summer.
Hawley heads to the landlocked central Asian country of Uzbekistan to compete in the 2024 World Triathlon Cup Samarkand on Saturday morning and she has little room for error if she to make it into the Paris field.
With the deadline for qualification looming quickly at the end of May, Hawley sits in 49th position in the Olympic rankings, with 55 places available for elite women in the Paris field.
Should she be usurped in the rankings, Hawley may have another chance to feature in Paris via a universality spot but she will be looking to take that fall-back option out of the equation with a good performance.
Hawley is not the only Bermudian in action in Uzbekistan with Tyler Smith competing in the elite men’s field.
Smith is unlikely to qualify automatically for the Olympics with a world ranking of 111 going into the event.
Closer to home and swimmers on the cusp of Paris qualification will be in action on island at the Ascot Bermuda National Championships.
Emma Harvey, her brother Jack, and Madelyn Moore are all scheduled to take part in a string of events as they make one of their last attempts to secure a place in the largest sports event on earth.
All three represented Bermuda in the Pan American Games in Chile in October, with Emma Harvey making one final and breaking a string of national records as she moved ever closer to qualifying in a number of distances.
