Elijah Daley delighted with season PB at World Championships
Elijah Daley has followed the examples of Sam Williamson and Logan Watson-Brown at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest.
Daley produced his fastest time of the season when it mattered most in heat two of the 200 metres butterfly, touching the wall in 2min 0.8sec, and he was delighted with his effort on his first try at an elite championships
“I’m really happy with the result,” Daley said.
“This is my first really top international meet representing Bermuda and it’s about gaining experience right now, so I’m really happy and I look forward to learning from my peers.”
Nerves are to be expected as you compete alongside the world’s best swimmers for the first time and Daley was pleased how he performed under pressure.
“It was my best performance of the season and just above my personal best,” the 18-year-old said.
“This is a high-level meet and like nothing I’ve ever experienced. It’s a very nerve-racking feeling, looking around and seeing all those people look at you. It’s such a big space and it’s about composing yourself, realising what you are there to do and trying to execute. Most importantly, you just have to have fun, too.
Daley has a quick turnaround with the 100 metres butterfly taking place on Friday and he is delighted to again have the chance to test himself against the best.
“I’m confident in my training and will keep trusting the process,” he said.
“I feel good, I’m ready to race, I’m excited and I’m going to give it all I’ve got.”
