Elijah Daley sets national record in Budapest
The records keep tumbling for Bermuda swimmers at the World Short Course Championships, with Elijah Daley getting in on the act in Budapest.
Daley set a national record of 53.53sec in the 100 metres butterfly on Friday morning and was thrilled with his achievement.
“I’m really happy with it. I wanted to go into the race with the mindset of going out fast,” Daley said.
“It’s an international stage and I really wanted to go for it. So I went for it and I felt that it was going well. I executed the race how I wanted to and I’m so happy with the end result.”
The championships in Hungary represents a new peak in the teenager’s career and he has learnt plenty from his experience in Europe both in and out of the pool.
“The key points I’ve learnt are how to overcome your nerves at big competitions like this,” Daley said.
“Also, when it comes to competitions like this, it’s all about keeping the focus on you and what you are trying to do and trying to achieve.
“Sure, the environment is really cool and all the people around you are really fast but you have to take it one step at a time and trust the process. Trust the training you’ve put in, the effort and all the work and go into the big competition and do everything you can to achieve what you want to do.”
Daley is going to take a short break after these championships but will be back training hard in 2025 as he attempts to achieve even more things at elite level.
“I’m taking a bit of time off until January 4,” Daley said.
“I’m doing a few courses in order to get ahead before going into university so 2025 is not completely swimming but I’m very focused on my training and excited to see where this year takes me.”
