Digicel: Our 3G+ and CellularOne’s 4G are the same
Wireless services provider Digicel said last night that there is no difference in technology or data speed between its ‘3G+’ network and the ‘4G’ network unveiled by rival CellularOne this week.Digicel Bermuda chief executive officer Wayne Caines said in a statement that he wanted to clarify some points for the company’s customers. He said that a change last month in the internationally recognised definition of ‘4G’ - meaning the fouth generation of wireless communication technology - had allowed CellularOne to brand their service 4G.“It is important to point out that both networks (Digicel and CellularOne) use the same technology namely High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) and as such, both companies offer similar download speeds,” Mr Caines said.“When Digicel launched its 3G+ service in July of last year, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) did not recognise HSPA+ as a 4G technology.“In December, the ITU then softened its definition for HSPA+ technology to fall under the umbrella of 4G.“As such this is a situation which boils down to timings and semantics not differences in technology or in speeds.”Mr Caines went on to claim that a major difference between the two services was that “Digicel’s 3G+ service is available Island-wide - unlike CellularOne’s, which is not”.CellularOne has also claimed that it has the best Island-wide coverage. In a press conference on Tuesday, CellularOne launched its new ‘4G’ network. Chief operating officer Frank Amaral said that both AT&T and T Mobile were marketing the same technology as ‘4G’ in the US.Mr Amaral added: “With our network already boasting best in class Island-wide coverage, the network with the most coverage is also the fastest.”M3 Wireless, which offers a ‘3G’ service, is working on an upgrade of its network that is expected to be completed this year.
