The digital shift

For those of you that have been hesitant about converting to digital photography from the tried-and-true film cameras I encourage you to take the leap. Keep your tried-and-true film camera until you feel comfortable with your new digital model as back-up if you must, but take that first leap. The prices of digital cameras have decreased over the past few years and it’s not impossible to find a cost-effective, entry-level solution that will meet your needs. The only issue you may have is making a selection from the endless options that await you.Think about how you currently use your camera as a baseline for the functionality you will need in your new digital model. Why not add video to your wishlist? Many digital cameras now include that functionality and there’s nothing better than bringing that moment to life with sound and action.Video is only one of the many features available, imagine a world where you can immediately view the image that you’ve just taken and take another if it isn’t just what you had hoped it would be. No more rolls of film to carry around or having to trek to the nearest developer for prints that may or may not meet your expectations.Digital photography gives you the freedom to print your own photos or if there is custom sizing required, you can simply e-mail the photos in to the print vendor. Red eyes are a common issue in my household, but when taking digital images, you can use software to get rid of this unsightly flaw. Some cameras even have red eye mode that will help eliminate it all together.Even basic point-and-shoot digital cameras come loaded with extras and if size is an issue, have no fear they come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well. There are lots of online resources out there to assist you in your selection, I’d urge you not to use one associated with a specific brand but one that takes the consumers needs into consideration as a first step. The link below develops profiles of consumers based on how they intend to use the camera and provides direction on the functionality of the type of camera that would best suit your needs.http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camera-buying-guideNext week we’ll be looking at point-and-shoot digital cameras.
