One of Bermuda’s first and most popular smartphone apps has added a new feature that will help tourists find the best of what Bermuda has to offer.Go Explore Bermuda has teamed up with the City of Hamilton to provide an interactive walking tour of the city. The Go Explore Bermuda app, which last year was voted Best Local Mobile App by Bermuda Tech Week, is free and available for both the Android and Apple phones and tablets. The app allows tourists to Bermuda quickly figure out where they are, what to do and how to get there. Now, with the City of Hamilton Historical Walking Tour feature, visitors to the Island can follow the tour and get information about the Bird Cage, Barr’s Bay Park and The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity just to name a few. Some points of interest even allow visitors to play an audio narration or a short video about the site.Since the Go Explore Bermuda app launched last May, it has been used more than 22,000 times to access local events, businesses, discounts and bus and ferry schedules. The makers of the app say they expect that number will soon go up.“Visitors can now explore our Island’s capital city and learn about the history and what makes this Island truly unique,” said Michael Brangman, marketing & business development manager for Ultra Concepts Group Ltd. (UCG). “We expect the usage to increase exponentially as we enter Bermuda’s busy tourist season.”The app uses Google maps and GPS navigation allowing users to follow directions to their destinations as they’re walking and find restaurants, businesses and sites along the way.UCG says their data shows many tourists download the app before coming to the Island.“The new generation of tourist expects information to be available on-demand and in the palm of their hand,” Mr Brangman said. “This is the first of its kind to enter the local market and it has significantly contributed to the economic well being of Bermuda’s businesses while enhancing Bermuda’s tourism product.”Since just about everyone travels with their phones these days, the technology places information about Bermuda businesses right into the hands of the customers. The best part is, the latest version of the app helps visitors avoid returning home to massive cell phone bills.“With our latest version of Go Explore, released in February 2012, visitors can eliminate roaming charges as the application and all its content is 100 percent downloadable,” Mr Brangman said. The makers of Go Explore Bermuda have also just launched a Go Explore Saint Lucia app. Both apps are free and available through iTunes and Google Play.
