OBA: Beware of pre-election satellite slot announcement
Government could make pre-election announcements regarding Bermuda’s unused satellite slot, according to OBA Senator Michael Fahy. The Senator said that the use of the slot could be a great money earner for the Island, but warned that the deadline for action is nearing and the Island needs action rather than election promises.“Just before the last election, Government announced with great fanfare that Bermuda had a breakthrough,” Sen Fahy said.“Since then, an election was held but not very much more has happened.“Government Ministers have jetted off to one place or another for urgent talks and meetings, all of which seemed to promise much but deliver little.”The satellite slot, given to Bermuda by the United Nations in 1983, must be taken advantage of by April 2013.Sen Fahy said Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Marc Bean told an online magazine that Government is in talks to find a taker before the deadline expires.“I bet we will have another grand pronouncement that a deal is yet again imminent relating to this potential pot of gold,” Sen Fahy said.“This is very important and has sadly been left to drift. It is a great opportunity, but can we trust that it will be done? Will it be done properly? We wait with bated breath.“We would like to hear an announcement that the deal is complete prior to the April 2013 deadline.”
