Windows 8

Consumers want to feel as if they have options and Windows 8 is Microsoft’s attempt to narrow the gap that was created by Apple as a result of this demand. Consumer’s acceptance of the Apple brand occurred in what seemed like a split second when they realised they had another option that didn’t start with the name Microsoft.Their change in Microsoft’s strategy is visually evident as they’ve taken some of the iPad’s beloved features enhanced them, and developed some unique features of their own.As it is distinctly different from anything that Microsoft has done before, your first encounter with Windows 8 may be a bit overwhelming at first, with all the added visuals and enhanced touch screen functionality.Intuitive products are a focus for all successful technology companies and Microsoft’s leap into this playing field makes perfect sense from a strategic point of view.Microsoft has tried to make the transition as simple as possible and has even provided an informative, system analysis tool for potential customers. In an effort to make the conversion to Windows 8 more accessible to the masses, users of XP, Vista and Windows 7 can upgrade for only $39.99, but this preferential pricing may only be offered for a limited time. The Upgrade Assistant is a virtual tool will scan your system, identify any programmes that are not compatible with Windows 8 and provides a report with results of its findings. The assistant can be accessed at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8 and should be the first step you take before making the decision to use Windows 8.This prequalification is a great idea and allows users to know in advance, what challenges, if any, they will have once they move to Windows 8.The Sync feature allows an almost seamless data transfer process for those using Windows 7 but some manual configuration will be required by those using older versions of Windows. Some features that Windows 8 features are:— Charms: These are icons located on the right and left edges of the screen that allow users to maximise their screen space. They provide accessibility to key functions such as device management, settings, apps and can also take you back to the last app that you used.— Active Desktop Tiles: Add as many tiles as you like and create a central, easily accessible location that provides instant access to all of your favourite apps, music, people and social media sites. The tiles automatically update and flash to let you know that something new has happened and you can arrange tiles in any configuration you like. Moving things around has never been easier on a Windows- based system and can be accomplished with a mere swipe of your finger.— SkyDrive: Allows you to collaborate with others and access your personal files from multiple devices through this cloud based service. It provides you with up-to-the-minute changes that you make to your files and all you need to do is install the app.— Picture password: ideal for those that have challenges remembering their passwords. This feature allows the user to use an image rather than a series of letters and numbers to gain access to their files.Only time will tell how successful their changes in their strategy and design have been, but I have a feeling Microsoft 8 will be a primary catalyst for many new and exciting developments within the industry. We’d love to know what topics you’d be interested in learning more about, so e-mail us at TechBuzz@btc.bm
