Delta debuts new iPad app with ‘glass bottom jet’
Delta Air Lines has just launched a new iPad app with a host of cool new features including one that will help you pass the time on long flights: a “glass bottom jet” setting that lets you see exactly where you’re flying and how fast. The new Fly Delta for the iPad app, part of a $140 million technology upgrade the airline debuted in 2012, incorporates many features such as booking tickets, destination guides, flight check-in and a “What’s Next” feature to help make post-flight plans. The “glass bottom jet” feature brings flights to life when used on board and connected to in-flight Wi-Fi (which more than 800 Delta planes are equipped with). It gives travellers a view of the plane flying over a Google map — it even shows a shadow that the aircraft is projecting. The map shows points of interests and lets users tap icons, which bring up static, existing Wikipedia pages and photos for the landmarks they’re flying over.It also includes Facebook functionality showing the location of your friends you may be flying over.“The incredible functionality and innovation found in the new iPad app embodies all that we’re doing to further improve the digital experience customers have with Delta,” said Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s executive vice president of network planning, revenue management and marketing, in a press release.Additional features on the Fly Delta app include viewing and changing seat assignments, tracking the upgrade list, tracking and paying for bags, receiving travel alerts, viewing airport and aircraft details and setting a parking reminder.Delta’s new app should be a hit with tablet-toting flyers, as Delta and other airlines add Wi-Fi and expand entertainment options in-flight.
