RA working with Digicel on internet price hikes

Further alarm: Digicel Bermuda CEO Liam Donnelly released news of an internet rate hike last month, but no further details (Photograph supplied)

The news that Digicel intends to raise their Bermuda internet rates was a cause of concern among some subscribers.

But some have raised further alarm because of Regulatory Authority requirements that carriers must not only give 30 days notice of rate changes, but must also say what those changes will be.

The April e-mail to Digicel customers that the rates were going up June 1, provided no such detail.

When asked about this, Digicel Bermuda would only say they are in the process of reviewing their prices, and the company is working with the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda to ensure that all requirements are met.

That was the word this week from a spokesman for the telecommunications company.

The Digicel internet contract reads: “Digicel may change our charges at any time. Any changes to our monthly charges will be published by us on the Digicel website and we will also give you thirty (30) days advance notice of the change(s).”

Failing to properly notify customers of a rate change could result in fines from the RA, and a refund for impacted customers.

Digicel Bermuda chief executive officer, Liam Donnelly, announced the internet rate hike in a letter to customers at the end of April.

“We want to be transparent about our pricing strategy, going forward,” Mr Donnelly wrote.

But the firm also announced automatic annual price increases, going forward, based on the Consumer Price Index.

The RA had not responded to a request for comment by press time.
