Jenson Bascome recalled for Davis Cup Americas campaign
Veteran Jenson Bascome has been recalled for Bermuda’s upcoming Davis Cup Americas group three campaign, which starts in Asunción, Paraguay, on Monday.
The 43-year-old has replaced Tariq Simons, with Gavin Manders, James Finnigan, Trey Mallory, and Daniel Phillips, who will be representing Bermuda for the first time in a team competition, completing the travelling contingent.
Bascome, who first played in the Davis Cup for Bermuda in 1999, made his last appearance in the competition in 2018.
“We have assembled a remarkable group of athletes who have proven their dedication and prowess on the tennis court,’’ said coach Ricky Mallory, who will be accompanying the team to Paraguay.
“The team is prepared to give their best and compete with utmost determination, representing our island with pride.”
The squad spent part of the past week preparing for the campaign at a training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida, before being due to fly to South America yesterday.
“We wish the team success in the upcoming assignment,” said a statement from the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association. “We thank the players and coaches for their dedication and support.
“We would also like to extend our gratitude to our sponsors for their continuous support in developing and promoting tennis on the island.”
Bahamas, Bermuda, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Venezuela make up the Americas group three.
A draw will be conducted on Sunday to determine the composition of the two round-robin groups with matches to take place at Club Internacional de Tennis, an outdoor clay surface.
Three teams will be promoted while two are set to go down at the end of the action on June 24.
